Bank rules

A bank rule codes any statement line whose description contains a piece of text. Rules are also learnt: when the same payee is coded the same way twice, Accountin adds a rule for it.

Adding a rule

  1. Open the rules

On the Bank tab choose "Bank rules".

  2. Enter the text

In "Description contains" type the text to look for, such as BRITISH GAS.

  3. Choose where it goes

Choose money in, money out or either, the account to code to, the VAT code and, if the client uses them, a department. Press "Add the rule".

How rules are applied

  • Matching ignores capitals and looks at the payee and description together.
  • The longest matching text wins, so AMAZON WEB SERVICES is used before AMAZON.
  • The list shows how often each rule has been used and how many waiting lines it would code now.
  • With no rule, Accountin still suggests a code for payments to HMRC for VAT and PAYE, bank charges and interest.
