Questions

What is the first accounting reference date?

The last day of the month in which the first anniversary of incorporation falls. A company incorporated on 10 March has a first accounting reference date of 31 March the following year.

When are the first accounts due?

Within 21 months of the date of incorporation, or 3 months from the accounting reference date if that is later. Later accounts are due 9 months after the year end for a private company.

Can the first period be longer than 12 months?

A company can lengthen a period to a maximum of 18 months, and only once every five years apart from some exceptions. See changing a company's year end.

How does corporation tax work for a long first period?

An accounting period for corporation tax cannot be longer than 12 months, so accounts covering a longer period need two Company Tax Returns. Accountin splits the corporation tax payment deadline the same way on the deadlines dashboard.
