Setting up a client for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Sole traders, landlords and individuals have an Income tax tab. It holds the client's Making Tax Digital details, their businesses and the quarterly updates for each.

Setting up the client

  1. Open Income tax

    On the client, open the Income tax tab.

  2. Enter their details

    Under "Making Tax Digital for this client" enter the National Insurance number, whether your practice is their main agent or supporting agent, and where the records come from: the ledger, the cash book or an uploaded spreadsheet. Press "Save".

  3. Fetch the businesses

    Press "Fetch from HMRC" to bring in the self-employment and UK property businesses HMRC holds, or add one with "Add a business".

  4. Choose the quarters

    For each business choose standard quarters (6 April to 5 July and so on) or calendar quarters (1 April to 30 June and so on).

Main and supporting agents

A supporting agent can send quarterly updates, adjustments and losses. HMRC only lets the main agent see the tax calculation and make the final declaration.
