Connecting the practice to HMRC

VAT returns and income tax updates go to HMRC through one connection for the whole practice, made by the owner with the practice's agent services account.

Connecting

  1. Open the HMRC page

On any client's VAT tab press "HMRC".

  2. Connect

The owner presses "Connect to HMRC" and signs in with the practice's agent services account.

  3. Check each client

Each client must have authorised the practice as their agent. If not, HMRC's reply says the practice is not authorised for that client.

What the connection shows

Once connected, the HMRC page shows returns filed in the last year, what is owed to HMRC, payments HMRC received and penalty points. The same connection serves income tax.

Submission to HMRC switches on once HMRC has recognised Accountin and issued its software credentials. Until then the screen says sending is not switched on yet, and everything up to the send works: building, checking and the client's approval.

HMRC's error messages and what they mean are listed in HMRC Making Tax Digital error messages.
