Preparing an SA100 tax return

The SA100 covers the main return and the employment, self-employment, property, foreign and capital gains pages, with the tax worked out on the SA110 calculation.

Preparing the return

  1. Start it

On the Tax returns tab open "Tax return (SA100)", choose the tax year and press "Start".

  2. Fill in the pages

Work through the sections: about the taxpayer, student loans, interest, dividends, pensions and benefits, reliefs, employment (SA102), self-employment (SA103S or SA103F), UK property (SA105), foreign income (SA106) and capital gains (SA108).

  3. Fill in from the books

Use "From the year-end accounts" or "From the ledger" for each self-employment, and "UK property from the income tax records". Filling in replaces that page's figures.

  4. Work out the tax

Press "Save and work out the tax". The SA110 calculation shows the figures.

  5. Get approval

Use "Make an approval link", or record a signed paper copy. Press "Print or save as PDF" for the client's copy.

Filing

Accountin files 2025-26 returns with the main pages and the employment (SA102), self-employment (SA103S and SA103F), partnership (SA104S and SA104F), UK property (SA105) and capital gains (SA108) pages, with the SA110 calculation. The full SA103F is used when turnover is £90,000 or more, or when you choose it under "Which page".

A return with foreign pages (SA106) can be prepared, printed and approved, and is filed through other software for now. Anything that stops a return being filed is listed under "Before it can be filed:" in the "File with HMRC" panel.

Filing with HMRC switches on once HMRC has issued Accountin its own vendor ID. Until then the filing buttons are greyed out, and the return can still be prepared, printed and approved.
