Sole traders

Records of all sales and income (GOV.UK: what records to keep)
Records of all business expenses, with receipts
Sales invoices, till rolls and bank slips
Bank statements for the business account and any personal account used for the business
VAT records if registered for VAT
Payroll records if the client employs people
Amounts owed to and by the business at the year end, and stock value, if the accounts use traditional accounting (GOV.UK: what records to keep)
Money taken out of the business for personal use
Mileage records and the business share of home and vehicle costs
Details of equipment and vehicles bought or sold
Other income for the tax return: employment, pensions, savings, dividends and Child Benefit received

Rent received for each property, from rent books or letting agent statements (GOV.UK: working out your rental income)
Receipts and invoices for repairs, insurance, utilities, letting agent fees, ground rent and accountancy
Mortgage and loan interest statements for the year, shown separately from capital repayments
Bank statements for the account the rent is paid into
Mileage logs for journeys made only for the property business
Furnished and unfurnished lettings shown separately (GOV.UK: working out your rental income)
Completion statements for any property bought or sold in the year
Details of jointly owned properties and each owner's share
